The Via Crucis in Erto - Holy Friday

Since mid 1600, every year on Good Friday, a representation takes place in Erto, in Roman clothes, of the passion and death of Christ. According to popular tradition, the re-enactment originates from a vow made by the Ertans to be spared from the terrible plague epidemic, which spread in the Piave Valley in 1631. Erto, perhaps thanks to its isolated position, was spared from the epidemic, so as to then the re-enactment takes place every year as a sign of thanks. Location of the representation is a small natural amphitheater, in the center of which stands the church of San Rocco. It is the drum roll, "Tamburins", which precedes the Passion of Christ with the sacred procession since the afternoon. During the afternoon procession, the oldest in the village, holding a pole topped by a wooden rooster, precedes a person whose identity remains unknown. The unknown, dressed in a white gown with hood and barefoot, carries the Crust of the Brustolon on his shoulders. The representation, starting from the narrow streets of the inhabited center, winds towards the church of San Rocco, where the representation of passion takes place. Over fifty actors, called "Cagnudei" or Judean, participate in the performance. After a summary trial Jesus goes up to Calvary while legionaries with torches escort Caiaphas with the Priests, the elders and Pilate. During the journey the populace continues to insult Jesus. Upon reaching a clearing on the hill, the crucifixion takes place.
